History
Welcome to the Former Greene County Home, also known as an Almshouse or Poor Farm. The Greene County Home Opened in 1862 and Operated for a little over a century seeing well over 6000 residents or “inmates” during its years of operation. Though the facility was designed to house those who were poor and destitute, in practice it became an asylum very much like many of the State Hospitals in the Region, but on a smaller scale. The early years of the buildings history proved to be, at times, very violent. Inmates were chained to walls in the basement and overcrowding was common place, leading to local and national criticism of the horrific living conditions.
